- GbTo-23, Garden Island: It measures about 122 x 65 m with an average depth of 3 m for a total current volume of 23,790 cubic m. The main excavation units penetrated the northeast face of the midden, and in some places the midden was faced to gain stratigraphic control. S-1428 is from a headless skeleton found in the "discarded" burial position. A crippled condition in life is suggested by pelvic and vertebral anomalies. S-1429 is from a burial the position of which suggested other than a prepared burial. Labret wear is present on the lower teeth, and temporo-mandibular joint arthritis is evident. S-1595 dates burial XVII-B-158. S-1596 dates burial XVII-B-197, part of a multiple burial that should date the lowest cultural level in the square. These dates comprise part of a human bone series from five shell midden sites in the Prince Rupert Harbour region. They were submitted to clarify the burial sequence in relation to dated stratigraphy and to bracket possible temporal groups in the known or estimate time spans of the sites. S-1428, S-1429, and S-1595 agree with the chronologic distribution of bone dates from other sites. S-1428 and S-1595 agree closely with estimates based on their stratigraphic positions. S-1429 suggests a need for a review of strata in Area 5, as the field record is not directly connected to other site areas. S-1596 appears wrong, 3000 years older than any other bone-dated burial from the sites. The left humerus of the same skeleton produced a normalized age of 2620 +/- 70 (GSC-2888), and the left femur of a second skeleton in the same multiple burial produced a normalized age of 2660 +/- 260 (GSC-2886).
