- DhSe-2, Shoemaker Bay: This stratified site was excavated in 10 cm arbitrary levels with five zones (A-E) distinguished in the stratigraphic profile. The contents of Zone A are assigned to Shoemaker Bay II, and all deeper materials belong to Shoemaker Bay I. Two radiocarbon dates from Zone A (GaK-5432 and -5108) are assigned to component II, and four dates are related to component I. Of the latter, two (GaK-5107 and -5106) are from the base of the cultural deposit in Zone C and are considered "likely too recent." GaK-5104, from Zone C matrix within a deep trench feature, "is more likely to indicate the beginning of intensive occupation" (McMillan and St. Claire, 1982: 61). GaK-5105, from the top of the Zone E beach gravel, "presumably dates the initial occupation of the site, when people were camping directly on the old beach surface" (ibid.). The faunal remains are reported by component, rather than by zone, "because excavating in arbitrary levels resulted in the mixing of material from different stratigraphic zones. It was not possible to separate zone assemblages" (Calvert and Crockford, 1982: 182). Where the arbitrary excavation levels did not correspond to the stratigraphic separation between Zones A and B, the faunal material was placed in "Component I/II" representing a mixture of the two components. The faunal assemblage from Component II is apparently derived entirely from Zone A. The stratigraphic context of the Component I faunal assemblage is not so clear. "Component I contains an average of five 10 cm arbitrary levels, but faunal remains were rarely encountered below the third arbitrary level" (Calvert and Crockford, 1982: 183). Likewise, McMillan and St. Claire (1982: 58) report that faunal remains occurred in some quantity, "particularly near the top of [Zone B]," but were rare in Zone C and apparently absent in Zones D and E. This database ignores the mixed Component I/II, associates the Component II fauna with the dates from Zone A, and assigns GaK-5107 and -5106 as limiting dates on the Component I faunal assemblage. GaK-5104 (Zone C) and GaK-5105 (Zone E) are considered to have no demonstrated association with faunal remains. Cultural affiliations are based on Mitchell (1990: 357).
