- DeRt-1, Pender Canal: This site contains three components, representing the Locarno Beach, Marpole, and San Juan phases. Carlson and Hobler summarize the results of a major salvage excavation conducted from 1984 through 1986, with chronological control supplied by 16 radiocarbon dates. They distinguish six stratigraphic units (SU), some with subdivisions. SU 1 is glacial till that is devoid of artifacts but has been leveled and penetrated by pits that may have contained posts. SU 2a is an intertidal deposit and SU 2b a compact black deposit, both containing artifacts of the Locarno Beach phase. SU 3, a massive deposit of burned shell, also represents the Locarno Beach phase. SU 4 is a layer of dark midden and shell found in the central part of the midden and containing burial 85-1. Its artifacts belong to the Marpole phase. SU 5a is another massive deposit of burned shell. SU 5b appears as a black humus layer in the western part of the excavation but expands into lenses of shell, charcoal and fired rock eastward. SU 5a and 5b represent the Marpole phase. SU 6 is the most extensive unit, covering the entire site and reaching a thickness of 2 m at the beachward edge of the midden and 75 cm toward the rear. This midden deposit contains artifacts of the San Juan phase of developed Coast Salish culture.
