feature 31, post in fill, Sopris phase. Feature 31 fill. Feature 31, a large subterranean chamber, is located ca. 10 ft N of Feature 6. It was apparently excavated down ca. 2 ft to a step, down another 1.5 ft; horizontal direction for ca. 2 additional ft. The dia. at the top was 3.3 ft; base dia. was 5.15 ft. Fill was stratified into 5 layers; however no difference in materials recovered and only the amt of charcoal was different in each level. Dense layer of charcoal on the floor. Walls and floor burned bright red and is thought to be purposeful. Fill artifacts: bone awl and chopper,m core, FLTs, debitage, utilized flakes, mano, Zea mays metate, proj pt, seeds, and shell. Also a Taos Incised jar, upside down with sunflower seeds and other vegetal matter.
