Comments
BgFp-4, Salem: This is a St. Lawrence Iroquois village covering 2.5 ha. Comment (J.F. Pendergast): Both GSC-446 and GSC-458 for the Salem site are later than M-1538 (560 +/- 100) for Roebuck and AD 1535 for Hochelaga, yet on the basis of ceramic seriation Salem should precede both these sites. Like the dates for the earlier Berry site (GSC-451 and GSC-453), the dating for Salem appears to be about 100 years too late. On the other hand, another date on Salem (M-1541) is grossly too late. There appears to be yet no stability of C-14 dates for the Salem site. Therefore, until more credible dates are available, it is suggested on the basis of ceramic seriation, that Salem be considered an earlier site than Roebuck and a later site than Berry. Comment (R.E. Morlan): When M-1541 is corrected for isotopic fractionation, the three dates from this site are in close agreement with one another.
