Comments
AcHm-VP, Ferguson Farm: Jackson (1988a: 30, 32) notes that a deer radius ... was found with mastodon remains at the Ferguson Farm. The mastodon is radiocarbon dated to 8910 +/- 150 B.P. (GSC-614) on bone. A comprehensive review of Ontario mastodon and mammoth dates (McAndrews and Jackson 1988) strongly suggests that this date is at least a thousand years too young. The site is below the Lake Rouge strandline and must date after 12,300 B.P. Unfortunately, while the deer bone may be contemporaneous with the Late Pleistocene mastodon, its context in relation to the latter was not observed. Jackson (1988a) does not mention S-16, a gyttja sample found in contact with the mastodon skull. Comment (McCallum and Dyck, 1960: 73): The occurrence is in a slight depression in lacustrine sediment... Geologic section, from top to base: gyttja and peat with bones of mastodon, 84 cm; marl with molluscs, 34 cm; blue lacustrine clay with molluscs, 53 cm. The date of the immediately overlying gyttja is not necessarily younger than that of the mastodon, but if it is older or contemporary, this is the youngest mastodon yet dated. Most authors consider the gyttja to be considerably younger than the mastodon skull.
