Comments
EdRk-7, Lochnore Creek: Originally occupying an area of almost 200 x 75 m, the site was reduced to about 60 x 50 m by the construction of three roads prior to 1964. The site is now destroyed, having been bulldozed and put under cultivation (Sanger 1970: 21). I-2085 consisted of charred wood from the floor of housepit 4. The date seems too recent, because the assemblage was thought to be older than that associated with housepit 2 (Sanger 1970: 104). Housepit 2 yielded a number of charcoal samples from the earliest housepit component, which was the most recent of three components at the site. One of these samples was split to produce GSC-407 and GX-407, dates that differ by 600 years. Re-runs produced GSC-407-2 and GX-407-2, with good intra-lab agreement but similar interlab discrepancy. In a concerted effort to resolve the discrepancy, Geochron sent GSC another unused portion of the sample that produced agreement with the GSC results (GSC-520). A portion of the same field sample also yielded I-1866, in agreement with the GSC dates. In conclusion, a date of 2600 to 2700 years ago is accepted for Zone Ic of the Lochnore Creek site, with the other subzones, Ia and Ib, being more recent (Sanger 1970: 104). A summary of the dates appeared in Radiocarbon 11: 33, 1969: Sample No. Lab.
