Comments
DfSi-4, Ch'uumat'a: This is a large conspicuous shell midden about 120 m long and 70 m inland. Consistent with evidence from the Little Beach and Shoemaker Bay sites, McMillan (1998) suggests that the occupants of the Ch'uumat'a site prior to 2000 BP were culturally distinct from the subsequent Nuu-chah-nulth people of this area. The earlier components are similar to the Locarno Beach phase of the Strait of Georgia, and the youngest component belongs to the West Coast culture type as defined by Mitchell (1990).
