EeBi-1, Phillip's Garden (formerly known as Port au Choix 2): This is a spring and summer sealing site that was excavated by Elmer Harp in the 1960s and by M.A.P. Renouf in 1985-1992. Harp pointed out the discrepancy between dates on charcoal (average 1580 +/- 13 BP) and those on charred fat (average 2326 +/- 34 BP). The difference was considered significant, but the reason for it was not obvious since all samples are believed to represent one general occupation phase. The discrepancy is only slightly reduced by normalizing the dates, but it would be further reduced by calibrating the charred fat dates according to a marine model. Renouf avoided this problem by selecting charcoal samples for her radiocarbon dates. The Borden designation EeBi-1 applies to the original Phillip's Garden site as well as to a separate area known as Phillip's Garden East. The latter is distinguished in this database as EeBi-1e, but this is not an official designation. Phillip's Garden West is numbered EeBi-11.
